The towns of Costa del Silencio and Las Galletas are situated about 12 kms from the Reína Sofía airport and are a 5-10 minute drive from Playa de las Américas. The meaning of Costa del Silencio in English is “the quiet coast” and this is exactly what it was back in the 1960’s when this area was first developed.
Costa del Silencio is where the first tourist accommodation in the south of Tenerife was built, namely the sprawling complex of Ten-Bel; a joint project headed by a Tenerife company and a Belgian company – hence the name. Since then, the area has grown considerably and is now a thriving town with both holiday and residential accommodation offering a large selection of shops, businesses and restaurants.
Due to the fact that some of the original, older builds are now over half a century old, this is the place to go if you are looking to get a bargain property in Tenerife. There are a lot of very affordable properties in Costa del Silencio such as Alondras Park and Coral Mar. If you are looking for a seafront property in Costa del Silencio then both Balcón del Mar and Amarilla Bay offer good locations.
For newer builds in Costa del Silencio, there are some very nice and affordable houses and villas with spacious gardens which have been built around the new Garañaña Park which is a recreational park offering jogging track, skateboard and skate park, climbing wall etc, all surrounded by tree lined verges.
Unfortunately there is no beach as such here but instead you have a beautiful, rugged, cliff top coastline with a very natural feel to it.
If you prefer closer proximity to the beaches, then just a stone’s throw away in the neighbouring town of Las Galletas you will find two small, naturally black volcanic beaches – one of them sitting alongside the marina which is home to both small leisure crafts and also larger commercial vessels.
Las Galletas (yes it does translate as The Biscuits in English!) is a smaller town with fewer international and more native residents giving a more Spanish feel to the town. If you want to feel like you really are living in Spain and are keen to practice your Spanish, then this could be the ideal area for you.
Las Galletas is built around a criss-cross of narrow streets offering all types of shops, cafés, bars and also a couple of dive centers. There is a lovely seafront promenade too with assorted restaurants, cafés and ice-cream parlours and a daily fish market offering the freshest fish available – quite literally from the net to the market stall!
If you are looking for cheap apartments for sale in Tenerife, maybe an older build and where you can better appreciate the charm of the typical Spanish town, then look no further than the local towns of Costa del Silencio and Las Galletas.
